Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Aviation is a hard-to-abate sector, with long-haul flights driving the majority of its emissions and limited near-term alternatives to liquid fuels. Power-to-Liquid–based sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) offers a scalable, drop-in solution that aligns with EU climate policy, ensures and avoids the land-use constraints of biomass-based fuels.
As part of this needed energy transition, a plant to produce sustainable aviation fuel is now being developed in Alby, Ånge Municipality. The facility will become the heart of an innovative industrial cluster taking shape in the Site Alby Östra area.

Achieving Climate Goals and Energy Independence

The development of the facility is a key step in enabling the necessary energy transition in the aviation sector — a major milestone that will ultimately help us meet climate targets. It will also enable us to ensure Europe’s energy independence.

New Job Opportunities

There is already a need for labor among current stakeholders. As industries relocate to Site Alby to complement the industrial ecosystem around the facility, new jobs will be created.

The Power-to-Liquid pathway

The Power-to-Liquid (PtL) process using the Fischer-Tropsch pathway with a Reverse Water-Gas Shift (RWGS) reactor is a cutting-edge, proven method to produces sustainable liquid fuels from electricity, water, and carbon dioxide. First, hydrogen is produced via electrolysis. This hydrogen is then reacted with captured CO₂ in the RWGS reactor to generate carbon monoxide (CO), forming a synthesis gas (syngas) composed of CO and H₂. The syngas is subsequently fed into a Fischer-Tropsch reactor, where it is converted into long-chain liquid hydrocarbons - a synthetic crude-oil substitute. These fuels are refined to sustainable aviation fuels which can be used directly in current engines and infrastructure, offering a scalable and fossil-free alternative for hard-to-decarbonize sectors such as aviation.

A Partnership for the Future

Norsk e-Fuel and Prime Capital, supported by RES have joined forces to realize the vision of large-scale production of sustainable aviation fuel in Alby. Together, we form a partnership where technical expertise, strategic capacity, and strong local presence work together to drive the green transition forward.
With Norsk e-Fuel’s leadership in e-Fuel technology and project development, Prime Capital’s experience in infrastructure investment and Power-to-X, and RES’s long track record of successful renewable energy project development, we are building a solid foundation for a project at the forefront of global innovation.

This is more than a collaboration — it is a shared commitment to reducing emissions from the aviation sector, creating new industry in northern Sweden, and contributing to a fossil-free Europe. Together, we are shaping the energy of the future.

About Norsk e-Fuel

Norsk e-Fuel was founded in 2019 to drive the transition to renewable aviation by establishing the industrial production of sustainable fuels based on CO2 and water. As project developer, the company is establishing large-scale production sites to deliver synthetic fuels to the aviation industry. Supported by strategic investors and carefully selected partners, Norsk e-Fuel is set to bring Power-to-Liquid production to industrial scale and determined to develop a new value chain for sustainable fuels.

About Prime Capital

Prime is an independent asset management firm and provider of financial services. The company specializes in alternative investments with a strong focus on renewable energy. Prime was founded in 2006 and currently employs 127 people in Frankfurt and Luxembourg. Their vision is to be one of the leading specialists in alternative assets — with a focus on performance.

About RES

A catalyst for change

What Will the Facility Contribute?

The e-Fuel plant will become part of an industrial hub that enables new industrial establishments on site. The industrial symbiosis helps the parties become more sustainable and cost-efficient.

Industrial Transition

Right now, there is a major push toward transitioning towards creating fossil-free solutions for aviation. This transformation is crucial not only to securing a place in tomorrow’s market and energy independence, but also to achieving climate goals and reducing fossil emissions.

New Industrial Investments

An e-Fuel facility like this attracts both Swedish and international companies to invest in the region and establish new industries in Alby and the synergetic environment.

Jobs

As industries relocate to Site Alby to leverage the potential for symbiosis, new job opportunities will emerge. The anticipated demand for labor among current stakeholders across the e-Fuel plant project is expected to lead to a significant increase in employment within the region.

New Business Opportunities

The e-Fuel facility marks the starting point for a circular industrial cluster where different industries can benefit from each other’s by-products. This opens up opportunities for additional business ventures and establishments not directly linked to e-Fuel or hydrogen production.

Export Products

In the unique industrial cluster planned for Ånge, different industries will be able to make use of each other’s residual products. The e-Fuel facility will enable the export of both sustainable aviation fuels and by-products from the site.
